Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are acquired during care or hospitalization procedures and represent one of the most critical public health problems worldwide, as they are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, antimicrobial resistance, length of hospital stay, and financial costs. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently listed the ESKAPE group (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) in the list of bacteria against which new antibiotics are urgently needed. Antimicrobial resistance is a significant threat to public health and has the potential to cause 10 million deaths annually up to 2050 if nothing is done to mitigate its continued advance worldwide.
